Fluency Plans

Fluency Plans and Fluency Support

'Becoming fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics…so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately' is one of the listed aims of the National Curriculum for Mathematics (2014).

Fluency should ideally operate at three levels:

  • firstly, the ability to choose and use an efficient way of calculating – ‘rapidly and accurately’ and ensuring that mental methods support more formalised written methods
  • secondly, to understand how different skills and knowledge in one area/strand of mathematics supports another – e.g. fractions represented on a number line linked to measures – so that the gap from ¼ to ½ to ¾ is the same distance (fractions as an equal part of the whole)
  • thirdly, looking for mathematical links across the curriculum

Our Mathematics Consultant, Sam Adams, has developed a set of Fluency Plans for all year groups from Year 1 to Year 6 covering all objectives from the 2014 National Curriculum for Mathematics across six half-terms.

These Fluency Plans are based on introducing an aspect of the mathematical curriculum and then re-visiting later in the academic year that make natural links to other strands within the mathematics curriculum / these objectives are highlighted and the ‘fluency’ links – cross-strand – are drawn out for the teachers.

Sam could also provide in-school planning support as part of the ‘Plan, Teach, Review’ package.
