Year 6 SATS support

The 2016 KS2 SATs tested children’s basic arithmetic in Paper 1 and their reasoning in Papers 2 and 3.

Our Maths Consultant, Sam Adams, has recent Year 6 teaching experience in schools in the run-up to SATs.  He has put together a set of ideas / resources and support that has made a positive difference to schools either meeting a challenging target or exceeding expectations.

  • Targeted Booster Lessons – these could be with a small group or a class and usually involve the ‘tricky stuff’ that children struggle with – e.g. Percentages/Ratio/Proportion or converting measures…
  • The ‘I-book’ – this is a personal journal for any child who needs it – ‘things I didn’t know’ or key definitions or…
  • The Museum Revision Wall – the children select ‘exhibits’ to put in the Museum Revision Wall to help them remember key facts / key definitions, and then there is a twist to further support their understanding…
  • Year 6 Learning Mats – a laminated A3 sheet that acts as an aide-memoire for children / an accessible, ‘carry ‘round’ Museum Revision Wall…
  • ‘Bad News, Good News’ – Paper 1 support – children are selected in small groups and told that there is ‘Bad News’ and ‘Good News’.  The ‘Bad News’ is that we are about to do a test, but the ‘Good News’ is the adults will be taking it…but with a twist…
  • Modelling the TECC approach for word problems – Sam can demonstrate how the TECC approach – as used in the Talk4Maths course – will support children in answering word problems in the Reasoning Papers
