New Research Highlights Efficacy of Boosting Reading Programme

Jane Carter is Senior Lecturer in Primary/ Early Years at the University of West England (UWE). Debbie Miles is one of our National Trainers for the Boosting Reading Programme (BRP)and formerly Reading Recovery Teacher Leader / Literacy Consultant for Bristol LEA. Jane and Debbie along with other colleagues have been working together for a number of years to deliver BRP to pre-service teachers as part of their Initial Teacher Education. The programme has proved to be highly effective improving confidence, pedagogic practice, knowledge and skills of the pre-service teachers and improving confidence, skills and attainment for those pupils targeted for the one to one support.

We know that this good practice is a win-win and Jane has now published a research paper that highlights the efficacy of BRP in this context and the significant gains made. The research is a large scale study collecting data from 362 students and 724 children, analysing pre and post intervention Reading Age data (using the British Ability Word Reading Scale as a measure). Further quantitative and qualitative data for 87 preservice teachers is also discussed as a case study.
