Education Works consultant Lindsey Howard

Tailored consultancy to improve reading standards and create confident readers.

Lindsey Howard

Lindsey has teaching experience across the primary phase as a class teacher and literacy co-ordinator. In 2006, she joined Cheshire LA school improvement team with a specialist role in Communication, Language and Literacy Development before becoming the LA lead for the ‘Every Child a Reader’ (ECaR) project.  Whilst in training at the IoE, University College London to become a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader, she explored proven teaching procedures for children struggling to achieve independence as early readers and writers. In providing a range of subsequent professional development training for teachers, she has facilitated opportunities for teachers to extend their own theoretical and practical approaches and critically reflect upon ways of aligning intervention lessons with class based teaching.

Through her involvement with BR@P and BR@S over several years, she has trained teachers, teaching assistants and other partners in children’s learning to introduce and implement these highly effective  programmes. She was involved in the development of BR@S, drawing on key principles and practical strategies to lead a Y7 research project. Her study extended school based evidence of the programme’s impact on progress, the challenges facing older struggling readers and led to the award of MA in Literacy Learning and Literacy Difficulties (IoE, University College London, 2013).

Lindsey now provides training and consultancy in a range of literacy interventions including BR@P and BR@S. The research, evidence based programmes that Lindsey offers are structured around proven good practice: they help children to use a problem-solving approach to strengthen independent reading, text comprehension, and writing skills. Working with a range of schools and LAs across England and Wales, including an EEF Research and Teaching School Alliance, her wider literacy training is designed to enhance quality first teaching and learning of grammar, phonics and spelling for reading and writing.

Lindsey is committed to empowering all stakeholders in children’s literacy learning to develop children’s self-efficacy and ignite their enjoyment as active readers and writers.
